A modern version of Dodge's famous early-1970s muscle car, the 2009 Challenger combines refinement with classic looks and available HEMI V8 power.
Just as buyers of the original Challenger could choose from many different engines, transmissions and trim packages, the 2009 model can be outfitted several ways, allowing it to be anything from an affordable, sporty coupe to an all-out performance machine, Gaddis said.
New for 2009 is the Challenger R/T Classic, which replicates the original Challenger as faithfully as possible, Dodge says.
"Our all-new 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T Classic is more than a modern-day muscle machine, it pays homage to one of the most storied nameplates in automotive history," said Dan Knott, vice-president of Chrysler's car, minivan and SRT product team, in a news release. "With heritage-inspired dual-wide body-side R/T stripes, original 'Challenger' heritage badging and the newest generation of our legendary 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine, the new 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T Classic delivers the greatness of our pony car past with advanced fuel-efficient muscle."
Standard features include 17-inch wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, cloth low-back bucket seats, a six-way power driver's seat, CD audio system, and power windows, locks and mirrors.
The high-performance Challenger R/T models feature a 277kw 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine, four-wheel disc brakes, cloth low-back bucket seats, a six-way power driver's seat, CD audio system, and power windows, locks and mirrors and other features such as 18- or 20-inch wheels, low-profile tires and performance-tuned steering.
The ultimate Challenger - the SRT8 - comes with a 317kw 6.1-liter HEMI V8 as well as an anti-spin rear axle, HID (high-intensity discharge) headlights and a high-performance suspension.
Options available individually or as part of trim packages include a 276-watt Boston Acoustics sound system, leather upholstery and Chrysler's "uconnect" system, which provides for hands-free control of the audio system and a cell phone.
